I can’t produce a bowel motion in earshot of another human. I go to extreme lengths to cover my tracks for carrying out this most universal and inevitable ritual. My Indian heritage is to blame.
Koel, i have been following your blogs and after i read this one, i just had to write a comment. I do too share the public poo anxiety and its not that great. And its not great at all for people who travel a lot for work. I do get it, each and every word you said. Mostly i rely on airport toilets because that's where you can still find a clean toilet or in New Delhi you can even pay the guy to clean it before you step into it. Not proud of it because my fellow indian had to do it for me but sometimes you just dont have a choice. But this also brings up something important that we all talk about but never do shit about it. Public toilets are pathetic in most of the places. Civic sense has gone for a toss apart from just one country which is JAPAN. I love Japan and the toilet habits of people. Its just simple to leave the toilet clean for the next one to use. Its part of their culture, dont just fucking think about your own ass for a moment and be a human for a change. Toilet behaviour needs to be taught at the school level and it needs to be imprinted in the human mind. As far as the anxiety goes, i am learning to deal with it. No point being constipated because it messes up the bowels for me for the next few days thats what i keep telling myself and i let it go. Keep writing your heart and mind out Koel
I so relate. And yes Japanese toilet culture and civic sense is gold. But I lived there and when you’re so rule bound in everything that you have no individual freedom you become depressed. High rates of suicides there. Just saying, no place is without its strife.
Completely agree. I guess its probably the time when the entire world is going through a megashift. There is this mega migration that's happening, the weather is changing, and what not. I think all of us just need to adapt to this new world order. All I know is that all of us can just be a little more human and just take a breath and look around to see this world with more openness and the beauty each one and everyone has to offer. So, professionally I run an industrial design studio and public toilets have always been something that is the most challenging projects we have ever done. We collaborated with a company from Malaysia and developed a Bio-Toilet and we were successful to some extent and deploy some of these toilets in Japan. But still our customers were not able to scale their business. There is a need and demand but no solution seems like working in the public domain. Though i wonder how amazing it could be if we can solve the problems of the public toilet in a country like ours.
